Our Story

The Dagbeneva Establishment was born from a simple yet powerful vision: to cultivate a culture of reading among young learners and inspire a lifelong love of knowledge.

The vision behind this initiative is deeply personal to the Executive Director. Raised in Hohoe in the Volta Region of Ghana, her upbringing and life experiences played a significant role in shaping her passion and commitment to this cause. As a child growing up in Hohoe, she was fortunate to have access to a public library under the Ghana Library Authority, as well as a private facility at the time known as the All Age Library, an opportunity that had a profound influence on her life.

At home, her parents fostered a strong culture of reading and made intentional efforts to provide books that nurtured her curiosity and love for learning. In addition, her teachers at the basic school she attended actively encouraged her to read widely and explore books beyond the classroom curriculum.

These combined influences opened up a world of knowledge and imagination, exposing her to books on a wide range of subjects and allowing her to discover new ideas, cultures, and perspectives. Through these experiences, she developed a deep love for reading and learning, which continues to inspire her commitment to promoting literacy and access to knowledge. These formative moments remain cherished memories and strengthened her belief in the transformative power of education.

After completing her postgraduate studies in M.A. in Contemporary English Studies at the University of Ghana, she became determined to help other children access the same opportunities she had received. She dedicated herself to creating spaces where young learners could discover the joy of reading, expand their horizons, and develop a lifelong passion for knowledge.

On 18th November 2017, in celebration of her birthday, the Executive Director initiated a small community reading group in Hohoe in the Volta Region of Ghana called the Extensive Reading Club. What began as a modest gathering soon grew into a safe and inspiring space where children could come together to read, explore ideas, and develop their literacy skills. Recognizing its growing impact and potential, the club was officially registered with the Hohoe Municipal Assembly on 20th February 2018.

As the club expanded, the Executive Director observed a deeper reality: many children faced socio-economic challenges that threatened their continued participation. Guided by compassion and a strong sense of responsibility, she began supporting these children beyond the activities of the reading club. What started as a literacy initiative gradually evolved into a broader mission, one dedicated to the holistic well-being and development of young people and their communities.

This journey revealed that fostering literacy alone was not enough. To address the wider needs of the children and the community, she envisioned a more structured and sustainable philanthropic approach. This vision led to the establishment of The Dagbeneva Establishment, a non-governmental organization committed to sustainable development, community transformation, and lasting social impact.

The name Dagbeneva, an Ewe phrase meaning May goodness come, reflects the organization's mission to bring hope, opportunity, and positive change to communities. The Ewe language is spoken primarily by people in the Volta Region of Ghana, as well as in Togo and Benin, and by Ewe-speaking communities in the diaspora.

Today, the organization works across several key areas, including education and literacy, health and well-being, environmental conservation, women and girls' empowerment, youth development and skills training, water and sanitation, and humanitarian support. Through strategic partnerships, community-centered programs, and sustainable initiatives, the Dagbeneva Establishment continues to nurture future leaders and contribute to inclusive and sustainable community development.
